A new opera theater for Rice University's music school in Houston will be designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro, the university is to announce Wednesday.

The New York-based firm, which was responsible for the recent renovation of Lincoln Center and is redesigning the Museum of Modern Art, was selected after a 10-month search.

The new 600-seat theater at Rice's Shepherd School of Music which will include a large rehearsal hall is expected to cost about $50 million and is to open in 2018.

Charles Renfro, a partner of the firm, will serve as lead architect in collaboration with Fisher Dachs Associates, a theater design consultant, and Threshold Acoustics.

Robert Yekovich, Shepherd's dean, said in a statement that the addition of the new opera house signifies the shift from a university "based in sciences to one that's based in arts and sciences."
