Virtual Reality Modeling & Application Development
FDA has been repurposing immersive 3D video gaming technology (virtual reality) to help visualize the performing arts spaces we are designing. This technology has proven to be a powerful design tool, and a compelling way to communicate the qualities of a space to clients, collaborators, and donors.
FDA specializes in designing and developing a performance space's basic geometry to deliver an environment that provides the most powerful and compelling relationship between a performer and audience possible. One key element in achieving this is ensuring that all seats have excellent views of the stage. This can only be fully understood through 3D analysis.
The traditional tools that we have used for years — including Extreme Sightlines©, our proprietary software for calculating floor elevations, AutoCAD 3D, 3ds Max, and other modeling tools — are fine insofar as they produce useful, reproducible images that can be understood by most viewers. However, no matter how accurate a rendering of a view from a seat may be on paper or on screen, it still doesn't provide the sensation of 'presence' — the powerful feeling that you occupy a particular space.
FDA has been adapting new technologies, including the Oculus Rift Developer Kit and Google Cardboard, which we have customized for the theatre planning niche to achieve clear and consistent communication of FDA's design intent. Looking around and moving through a space virtually through hands-on demonstrations with the Oculus VR headset and even with mobile phones and cardboard viewers has been a big step towards clarity and understanding for our clients.
Process & Deliverables
Our process of rapid iteration and visualization is an invaluable asset to developing theatre architecture. For architectural visualization, we can provide full-service rendering, from flat images, to panoramas, to full VR walkthroughs, complete with lighting and materials. We can provide a virtual environment that will allow you to sit anywhere in the room, and toggle through a variety of design options.
