181 Mercer Street Complex

New York University

When complete, 181 Mercer includes dozens of new music instruction, rehearsal, and practice rooms; performance spaces for NYU’s drama and music programs, including NYU’s first professional-level proscenium, fly-loft theatre for student productions; and the University’s first orchestral ensemble room, in addition to more classrooms than any other NYU building.

181 Mercer’s internal second floor space, The Commons, serves as the heart of student activity and provide the NYU community with open and expansive collaborative study, meeting, and gathering places. Circulation for the students and the Commons wraps along the building’s transparent perimeter.

181 Mercer serves as a hub for NYU students and faculty, but it also engages Greenwich Village, SoHo, and the larger New York City community. The building’s open and inviting northern entrance flows into a large and welcoming public lobby that spans the entire width of the building. By activating this space with chairs and small tables, NYU hopes to further connect the community and the University.
