Principal Robert Campbell has over 35 years’ experience working in all types of performing arts and in a wide variety of formats, from set and lighting design and directing to theatre production management.
In his 32 years at FDA, Robert has been an invaluable project manager, programmer, and planning and design expert. His projects range from major performing arts centers, concert halls and opera houses, to theatres and recital halls for college and university campuses. His diverse background in theatre engineering, electrical engineering, acoustics, lighting, architecture and back-of-house experience makes him a unique collaborator in the theatre consulting field.
Significant projects on Robert’s resume include the reimagining of Lincoln Center’s David Geffen Hall, the renovation and expansion of the historic Grand Theatre for the Milwaukee Symphony, and The Centre for Discovery and Innovation at the Stratford Festival, the Eccles Performing Arts Center in Salt Lake City, the Schermerhorn Symphony Center and the Country Music Hall of Fame CMA Theater in Nashville; the dramatic expansion of Arena Stage and the Harman Center for The Shakespeare Company in Washington, DC; the Montreal Symphony Center; and the Four Seasons Centre for the Canadian Opera Company in Toronto; and the renovation of Broadway’s historic Helen Hayes Theater for Second Stage.
His significant educational projects include the newly opened College of the Holy Cross’ Prior Center for the Arts and Creativity in Worcester, MA, the Hamel School of Music at the University of Wisconsin – Madison, the Voxman School of Music at University of Iowa, the Kennedy Center for Theatre and the Studio Arts at Hamilton College, the Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts at Brock University , the New School University Center, Bing Concert Hall at Stanford University, Brown University’s Granoff Center for Creative Arts, Reed College Performing Arts Building, and the Yale School of Drama’s Iseman studio theatre.
Robert was instrumental during the renovation and expansion of Chicago Orchestra Hall, and as PM he designed seating plans and sightlines for the new construction projects at the award-winning New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark, Schermerhorn Concert Hall for the Nashville Symphony, the Long Center in Austin, the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts in Toronto, and the Sanford and Dolores Ziff Ballet Opera House at the Arsht Center for the Performing Arts in Miami.
Robert holds a BS in electrical engineering from the University of Iowa and an MFA from the Yale School of Drama, where he studied theatre engineering and planning, acoustics, and lighting design. He is a current member of the American Society of Theatre Consultants (ASTC).
In the past, Robert has designed lighting for many off-off Broadway productions, He serves on the Board of Directors of Gallery Players of Brooklyn, where he directed the company’s productions of “The Odd Couple” and “Night, Mother.” He has also taught theatre history and design courses at Tisch School of the Arts at NYU.
